Tess of the D'Urbervilles হচ্ছে Tess নামের মেয়ের করুণ কাহিনী। তার বাবা মা তাকে
আত্বীয়ের বাড়িতে পাঠায় কাজের জন্য। সেখানে Alec এর সাথে তার দেখা হয়। সে Tess কে তার মায়ের পোল্ট্রির কেয়ারটেকার নিয়োগ দেয় ও
তাকে ধর্ষণ করে।
Tess এর একটি অবৈধ
ছেলে হয় ও মারা যায়।
তারপর সে আরেকটি
ফার্মে যায় ও Angel নামের একজনের
প্রেমে পড়ে ও তাকে বিয়ে করে।
* একসময় Angel
ব্রাজিলে চলে যায়। তখন Tess
আরেক জায়গায় কাজে যায় ও
আবার Alec কে দেখতে পায়। সে
খুব ধনী ছিল।
* Tess তখন অভাবের কারণে
তার ধর্ষণকারী Alec কে বিয়ে করতে
রাজি হয়।
তখন Angel
ফিরে আসে। Tess স্বামী Alec কে কুপিয়ে হত্যা করে।
সে আবার Angel
কে নিয়ে পালিয়ে যায় ও ধরা
পড়ে ফাঁসি হয়।
Angel তার কথা অনুযায়ী
তার বোনকে বিয়ে করে।

টেস অভ দা ডারবারভিলস টমাস হার্ডির অন্যতম সেরা উপন্যাস। টেস নামক এক সরল
পল্লিবালার করুণ পরিণতির কাহিনী লেখক মমত্বের সাথে বর্ননা করেছেন। ঘটনাক্রমে টেসের
দরিদ্র পিতা জানতে পারেন যে, সে প্রাচীন ডারবারভিল বংশের উওরপুরুষ। এই তথ্যের
ওপর ভিত্তি করে সে ও তার স্ত্রী টেসকে জনৈক আলেক ডারবারভিলের মায়ের কাছে
কাজ করতে পাঠায়। লম্পট আলেক ডারবারভিলের পাল্লায় পড়ে টেস সন্তান জন্ম দেয়। সেই সন্তান টেসের
জীবনে দুঃখ বয়ে আনে , তাই সন্তানের নাম
রেখেছিলেন ( Sorrow)। সন্তানটির মৃত্যুর বেশ কিছুকাল পর এন্জেল
ক্লেয়ার নামক এক ছেলের সাথে তার বিয়ে হয়, কিন্তু টেসের অতীতের কথা জানতে পেরে এন্জেল
তাকে ফেলে দূরে সরে যায়। ভাগ্যবিড়ম্বনায় টেস পুনরায় আলেকের খপ্পরে পড়ে,
অন্য দিকে এন্জেল নিজের
ভুল বুঝতে পেরে টেসকে গ্রহণ করতে চায়। ঝোঁকের মাথায় টেস আলেককে হত্যা করে। এন্জেলের সাথে
পুনর্মিলন ঘটে। কিছুদিন লুকায়িত থাকার পর টেস আইনের চোখে দোষী প্রমাণিত হওয়ায়
তার মৃত্যুদণ্ড হয়।

ডারবারভিলস টমাস হার্ডির
অন্যতম একটি ঊপন্যাস। টমাস হার্ডি এই ঊপন্যাসের মাধ্যমে বোঝাতে বা দেখাতে চেয়েছেন
যে পৃথিবীতে এমন অনেক ঘটনা ঘটে যার ঊপর মানুষের কোন হাত নেই। সামান্য ভুলের জন্য
মানুষকে অনেক বেশি কষ্ট পেতে হয়।
Tess of the D'Urbervilles Summary -Thomas Hardy:
Shishir Kona.
Jack Durbeyfield, a haggler, lives in the village Marlott
with his family. On the way, returning home from town he meets a priest and
knows that he is the heir of ancient knightly family of the d'Urbervilles.
Hearing this he left his work and his wife insists their elder girl Tess to go
to Tantridge to claim kinship from d'Urberville family. Tess goes there and
finds a job in poultry farm. A man, Alec d'Urberville tries to seek Tess's
attention but Tess always rejects him. On day time goes against Tess and she
has been raped by Alec.
After that incident Tess returns to his house and gives
birth to a child. This child gifts more miseries in Tess life and lives no
more. Tess joins in a dairy farm in Talbothays and finds a good man, Agel
Clare. They both fall in love and agree to marry. Tess tries to inform her past
to Angel but can't. At wedding night Angel confesses his past and Tess forgives
him. But Angel can't forgive Tess that's why he leaves Tess and moves to Brazil.
Tess, being penniless leads a miserable life. On workplace,
she meets Alec and has been followed by Alec. Alec tries to mislead her by
telling that Angel will never returns.
Angel returns from Brazil and being repented starts to find
Tess. When he meets Tess it's too late and she rejects him. Being furious on
Alec Tess kills him and search for Angel. After nine days escaping of Tess and
Angel, they are caught and Tess is arrested.
Tess is sentenced to death for killing Alec. She keeps
promise on Angel to marry her sister Liza-Lu. Angel and Liza, from west hill
tower, notice e black flag that indicates death of Tess.
